The Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain

Where the mosques have become churches
Where only bells and crosses can be found
Even the mihrabs weep
Though they are solid
Even the pulpits mourn
Though they are made only of wood
-Al Rundi, 13th century-

Where is cordoba
The home of sciences
And many a scholar
Whose rank was once lofty there
Where is seville
And the pleasure it contains
As well as its sweet river
Overflowing and brimming full
There are cities
Which were pillars of the land
Yet when the pillars are gone
The land may no longer endure
-Al Rundi, 13th century-
